“Along Via Roma, Piazza San Domenico opens at a certain point with the Church of the same name that is one of the most sumptuous monuments of Baroque Palermo…San Domenico is the Pantheon of the Sicilian capital, or the Westminster Abbey if you prefer. It all began in 1848 when the revolutionary Parliament met in the Dominican temple. The episode consecrated the place to panoramite glory. Since the middle of the last century, it has been the custom to bury great Sicilians in San Domenico… Those who are not buried in San Domenico have at least wanted to be remembered there with a funeral monument. Thus, we find buried or commemorated the great historian Michele Amari, the patriot Ruggiero Settimo, the Garibaldini brothers Rosolino Pilo and Giacinto Carini, the astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi, discoverer of the planet Ceres and of asteroids, the painter Giuseppe Velasquez, not to be confused with the Velasquez who counts, the Hungarian patriot Luigi TuKory, the poet Giovanni Meli, the Marquis of Villabianca and others such as General Antonio Cascino, conqueror of Gorizia. Francesco Crispi has a monument.”
